Builders in Ferring
Extensions, garage conversions and renovations on Ferring bungalows and detached homes, run by one family team from nearby Worthing.
A village that rewards building properly
Ferring still reads as a village. It sits between the sea and the downs, the roads are quieter than the main coast route, and a lot of the housing is single storey or low-rise with proper space around it. That combination is why so much of the work here is about making an existing house bigger and better rather than knocking it down.
Rockshore Building Group is family run and third generation, based at 51 Northbrook Road in Worthing, a short drive from Ferring. There are 65 years behind the name and over 30 years of combined on-site experience across the team. Joe runs the jobs and is on site, and we cover every trade in house so you deal with one company from first survey to final snag.
Because plots in Ferring tend to be generous, a lot of homes here have room to extend to the side or the rear without crowding the garden or the neighbours. Where the plot is wide, a side extension or a garage conversion is often the quickest win. Where it is deep, a rear extension opening onto the garden usually gives the biggest change for the money.
Ferring at a glance
Ferring still reads as a village. It sits between the sea and the downs, the roads are quieter than the main coast route, and the plots are generous enough that most houses can grow rather than move.
We are based at 51 Northbrook Road in Worthing and we cover Ferring as part of our normal patch, not as a special trip. That is the practical difference: the same faces each morning, materials when we say, and Joe able to stand in the room with you if a decision needs making.
Extending a Ferring bungalow
Bungalows and chalet bungalows make up a good share of Ferring’s housing, and they are one of the most flexible starting points there is. Depending on the plot and the roof, the sensible options are usually:
- Rear extension to make one big kitchen, dining and living space with proper glazing onto the garden.
- Side extension where the plot is wide, adding a bedroom, utility or a second bathroom.
- Going into the roof with a loft conversion or dormer to add bedrooms without losing any garden.
- Opening up internally with structural alterations, taking out load-bearing walls on a steel and changing how the whole house works.
Single-storey homes also throw up their own issues. Older bungalows often have shallow foundations, dated wiring, poor insulation and drainage runs that were never designed for a bigger kitchen. We survey properly, price for what is actually there, and design the new work so it ties into the old structure rather than fighting it.

Our services in Ferring
Everything under one team, with one point of contact.
Garage conversions and outbuildings
Plenty of Ferring homes have a garage that has not held a car in years. Converting it is one of the cheapest square metres you will ever add, because the walls and roof already exist. The work that matters is the part you cannot see afterwards.
- Raising and insulating the floor, and dealing with any damp coming through the old slab.
- Insulating the walls and roof to current standards so the room is warm in January, not just in June.
- Infilling the garage door opening with a window or door that suits the front of the house.
- New electrics, heating, plastering and flooring, all done by our own tradesmen.
- Building regulations approval, arranged and inspected with the local authority.
Done properly you get a study, a bedroom, a snug or a utility. Done badly you get a cold room with condensation, which is why we do not cut the insulation or damp-proofing to hit a number.

One team, tidy sites, signed off properly
The parts of a build that decide whether you would use the same builder twice.
One team for the whole job. We self-deliver carpentry and joinery, electrical work, plumbing and heating, groundwork, rendering, flooring and roofing. You are not project managing five contractors around each other and covering the gaps in between.
Tidy sites in a quiet village. Ferring’s lanes are narrow in places and driveways are shared. We plan deliveries and skips instead of blocking a road all week, keep muck off the pavement, sweep down at the end of the day and let your neighbours know before anything loud starts.
Building control, handled. We work directly with the local-authority building inspectors and book the inspections at the right stages, so foundations, structure, insulation, drainage and fire safety all meet UK building regulations. Our tradesmen train regularly on fire safety, insulation, air quality and health and safety.
Insured and rated. Comprehensive insurance as standard, a City & Guilds badge on the vans, and a Checkatrade rating of 10 out of 10 on Checkatrade with 10s for quality of work, reliability and communication. We have been members since April 2025 and the work is covered by Checkatrade’s £1,000 guarantee. There is more on our about page and our recent work.

Common questions
Do you cover Ferring from Worthing?
Yes. We are based at 51 Northbrook Road, Worthing, which is a few minutes along the coast. Ferring is well inside our normal working area, along with Goring, East Preston and Rustington. Call 01903 411992 or 07949 172906 to book a look at the job.
My road is narrow with limited parking. How do you manage access?
We plan it before the first day. Deliveries are booked for set times rather than left to chance, skips and grab lorries are on and off quickly, and we keep the number of vehicles on the road down. Where a driveway is shared or a lane is tight we agree the arrangements with you, and with the neighbours, in advance.
Is a garage conversion cheaper than an extension?
Usually, because the walls, roof and slab are already there, so the cost is in the floor build-up, insulation, infill wall, services and finish. Whether it is the right choice depends on what you need the space for and whether you still want somewhere to park. We will price both options if you want to compare properly.
Does living near the coast affect materials?
It does. Salt air and wind-driven rain are hard on render, paint, fixings and window frames. We specify coastal-suitable render systems and paint, non-corroding fixings, and properly detailed flashings and verges, and we pay particular attention to sealing around new openings on the exposed elevations.
Will you deal with planning and building control?
Yes. Full project management is included. We advise on whether the work is permitted development or needs an application, and we work directly with the local-authority building inspectors so everything is inspected and signed off at the right stages.
